Home & Earth Together
“I felt the biting cold of winter and knew there had to be a better way—a way to harness the sun’s warmth and bring comfort to our homes without relying on fossil fuels.”
A Vision Born from the Cold
It all began in a small, unheated studio in Colorado. Feeling the harsh chill of winter, Gary DuChateau realized there had to be a better solution—one that didn’t rely on fossil fuels. Inspired by the power of the sun, he started experimenting with simple, natural materials, eventually creating the first prototype of thez SunnyThermal solar collector. The goal was clear: to bring sustainable warmth into homes using the sun’s natural energy.
With each prototype, Gary’s vision grew stronger. His handcrafted designs evolved, and soon, what started as a personal quest became the foundation for a company dedicated to sustainable heating solutions. Along the way, Susan joined as a collaborator and partner, bringing new ideas and a shared commitment to innovation.
The SunnyThermal Journey
Milestones of Innovation
1980s
The First Spark
Gary’s inspiration struck during the cold South Dakota winters. He began experimenting with simple ways to harness solar energy, using granite rocks as a natural heat storage solution.
2006
Built the First Collector
In Colorado, Gary hand-built the first solar collector prototypes and partnered with Central Solar, Inc. Here, Susan discovered the product’s potential and became one of its earliest supporters, using it to heat her own studio.
2013
The Rock Stabilizer
A client’s request for overnight heating led to the development of the Rock Stabilizer. Susan played a key role in testing this innovation, helping refine it into a reliable thermal storage solution.
2018
Community Growth
Gary and Susan worked together to expand SunnyThermal’s reach, with installations in greenhouses, cabins, and homes. Their collaborative efforts led to a system that adapted to various climates and customer needs.
2020
A New Chapter
As the pandemic hit, Gary decided to pass the company’s legacy to Susan, trusting her to lead SunnyThermal into the next phase. It was a challenging time, but Susan’s passion and leadership brought the company through.
2024
Relaunch in California
Under Susan’s guidance, SunnyThermal was reborn with a focus on combining the solar collector and Rock Stabilizer into a cohesive system. Based in California, the company continues to innovate and bring sustainable heating to homes and businesses.
Looking Forward
SunnyThermal Passive Solar Rock Stabilizer creates conditions conducive to life for humans, animals, and plants. Our mission is to educate, promote, and supply materials for builders to integrate this simple system into local structures for temperature resilience in climate changes.
